Abstract

Background:
Pareto analysis is a tool for problem-solving during quality improvement activities in medical laboratory science. The Pareto chart is used to identify the most important item in a group of items and focus problem-solving activities. This break
down
an item into its component parts and then arranges and displays those parts in order of importance.
Methods:
We evaluated routine problems in clinical chemistry laboratory from January to December, 1995, We used systems thinking with cause and effect diagram for problem-solving and Pareto analysis to solve problem factors of analytical performance
of
Hitachi 7150 system for one year
Results:
We found that total problems reduced 39 percentage during six months after educated systems thinking and cause and effect analysis.
conclusions:
We conclude that 71.2% of the total problems controlled by 23% of the items(three factor). Upon examination, this 80/20 rule(Pareto distribution) probed true in our working area. We use the Pareto distribution to achieve an 80% quality
improvement
by working on 20% of the causes.
